New iPod Models

Apple, Inc. today introduced four new iPod Models for the Holiday Season and lowered the price of it’s popular iPhone. Get ready parents for a holiday wish list that includes an iPod; if it didn’t already have one on it. There is an updated iPod Shuffle, a new redesigned iPod Nano, a new full size iPod (now called a iPod Classic) and a new iPod Touch. Below is a breakdown of the new iPod models.

New iPod ShuffleiPod Shuffle – The updated Shuffle comes in four new colors plus the base silver. The iPod Shuffle is a great way to introduce your kids to an iPod without breaking the bank. At $79 for a 1GB model, you can fit up to 240 songs, plus it has a clip to attach to your clothes so it won’t get lost. The Shuffle has a rated music playback time of 12 hours with skip-free playback. The iPod Shuffle is a perfect stocking stuffer that your kids will love.

New iPod NanoiPod Nano – The new iPod Nano has been completely redesigned for the holidays. It now sports a wider and thinner all-metal; anodized aluminum and polished stainless steel enclosure. The iPod nano now has a larger, 320-by-240-resolution display that’s brighter than before. The iPod Nano can now playback video, something that has been available only on the full size iPod and never on a device so small. The new Nano comes in a 4GB (1,000 songs) and 8GB (2,000 songs) and starts at $149. Kids will like that they can watch movies, but with only a 2″ screen, the full size iPod might be a better choice for video.

iPod Classic – Unlike the Nano the full size iPod or “Classic” as Apple calls it received a more modest update. It now has a completely new, thinner, all-metal design and is available in a 80 and 160 GB version. The 2.5″ display is better than the Nano for viewing and storing video. And with the 160GB version holding up to 40,000 songs, it really is a portable music jukebox. The iPod classic is perfect for the teenager that wants to hold all his/her music and have the ability to watch movies as well.

New iPod TouchiPod Touch – This is the iPod model that people have been waiting for. Apple has taken the iPhone and removed the phone part leaving us with the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch is a music and video player that can also browse the internet via a Wi-Fi connection. It can download songs from the iTunes Store directly and then sync them back up to iTunes once you dock it. It has the same great multi-touch interface and gorgeous 3.5″ widescreen display as the iPhone. This iPod is destined to become the hot gift for your teen this holiday, but at a starting price of $299 for the 8GB version and $399 for the 16GB, this is no stocking stuffer.

With all these new iPod in time for the holiday season, you have plenty of great technology gifts to spoil your kids. But don’t forget about Mom and Dad, Apple cut the price on the iPhone to just $399. Who says good things don’t come to people who wait.

Education Section

As a teacher, people often ask me what they can do to help their child be successful in school. The answer, I think, is surprisingly simple. Preparing your child for school doesn’t begin (or end) on the eve of Kindergarten. It is a continual process beginning in your child’s infancy and continuing on throughout their schooling.

Essentially it’s being an enthusiastic, life-long learner. This needs to be modeled and encouraged. That means by you. It’s not as intrinsic as you might think and, if it is, then it can be very easily discouraged in our fast-paced lives that are frequently saturated with “educational” television shows and dvds.

Tough Boris BookTough Boris is the story of a pirate, fearless but also compassionate, who dig up some treasure only to discover a stow-away aboard their ship. Written by Mem Fox and nicely Illustrated by Kathryn Brown, Tough Boris is one of those children’s books that you can read over and over and never tire of. The text is simple, yet compelling; a great read for both kids and adults.

Britax Car Seat

Installing a car seat can be one of the most frustrating experiences a parent goes through. You tighten and adjust and install that little metal clip and try to lock it back in place and the seat is still loose. And you start the process all over until you convince yourself that it feels secure, even though it’s not. The LATCH compatible seats are much improved in this regard but what if you don’t have it on your car.

Hollywood is full of paparazzi that want to get that perfect picture of a celebrity, so they can sell it to the media and make a lot of money. They will go to almost any length to achieve their goal. Most of the time celebrities are trying to stop the paparazzi from taking their picture, and they get mad when they are followed. Not only do the paparazzi want pictures of celebrities, but they also want pictures of their babies.

The Art of StorytellingI was reading a very entertaining article in my September issue of Wondertime about telling scary stories to your kids, and I immediately related to it. In the article, he author, put on the spot by his son to tell a monster story, was caught of guard. Because I am the designated storyteller in the house, I have had to become very adept at making up fiction on cue. It has taken many years of perfecting this skill, or curse on some nights, and I am still far from a master wordsmith.

Baby Bargains BookBaby Bargains was one of the most valuable books I read while pregnant. And I read dozens of pregnancy and baby books. Babies need lots of stuff and that stuff costs a lot of money. The process of trying to decide what to buy and not buy can be overwhelming. Baby Bargains has extensive charts, detailed information and helpful hints to let you know exactly which brand and model is the best for you and it’s written in an easy to read (and reread) format. It includes information on bedding, clothing (even maternity), furniture, monitors, car seats, high chairs, diapers, strollers, bathtubs and more. I could go on and on. I had mine filled with highlighter marks and post-its before we went to register for my baby shower.

The authors’ Baby Bargains web site is another excellent resource. Their forum topics are appropriate for newborns to preschoolers and range from feeding to potty training to vacations. I’ve always been impressed by the helpful hints posted there.

Baby Bargains is an excellent book. It will save you tons of money, help you feel confident when making your purchases, and save you the frustration of buying the wrong thing.
