Reminiscing precious moments is a past time we all love. It’s fun, and sometimes poignant, to look at images from way back since these are all we have to remind us of the past. Your baby’s firsts are immortalized with those pictures you never got tired of taking. But before you take another shot, here are some tips in capturing great shots for your baby’s photo journal.

1.	Know Your Subject: You probably know your baby’s mood better than anyone else so take pictures when your baby is in a good mood. Not only will you get wonderful photos, but it also will be less stressful for the both of you. Don’t forget to shoot pictures of seemingly ordinary moments – eating, sleeping, playing – take multiple shots, and create a collage in your baby’s photo journal!

2.	Moving In Close: In photographing your baby, you have to alter your shooting style just a bit to achieve the image you are looking for. Move in and shoot at eye level, this will make up for the difference in size (your baby is cute and small) as well as create a more personal connection with your subject. But hey, this shouldn’t stop you from taking good shots from different distances, experiment.

3.	Know the Technical Basics: You are not a professional photographer; you are just an ordinary parent trying to compile great photos of first-times for your baby’s journal. Yet, this shouldn’t be an excuse of not knowing and learning of photography basics. One of which is that, it just couldn’t be too bright, use natural light as much as possible. Another is to do away with distractions in the background so that the focus is on your subject. Next, it doesn’t hurt to invest on a good quality camera and film.

Enjoy your photo session with your baby and capture those first-times in vivid colors, soft sepia, or classic black and white. Fifty years later, your baby’s journal is a treasure chest of memories so make sure you capture those precious moments now.

By James Anthony

Making your own baby car seat cover is not a difficult task. Although there are ready made baby car seat covers available in the market, you might want to get one or make one for your car seat which uses a special print or pattern to go with your vehicles interior, or better yet which your kid likes. Colorful and patterned car seat covers not only look different and stylish, but they also get attention from other people.

If you make a car seat cover at home for your childs car seat, you will be better able to make one which fits onto the car seat exactly. The ones available in the market might be either too large or too small for your specific car seat, and hence can give an odd look to the whole interior of the vehicle. Choosing and making a custom car seat cover will take care of this problem. Similarly, you will have the advantage of easily removing the car seat cover any time you want for easy cleaning. When making a car seat cover at home, you can make multiple of them to replace any old car seat as well to give it a brand new look, or to change your existing car seats regularly, without spending a lot of money on buying readily available and expensive car seat covers from the market.

When you decide to make a car seat cover for your baby’s car seat, the first step should be to measure the length and breadth of the seat and the backrest of the seat. Once you have the 2 measurements, you will need to add 10 – 12 inches to either of them to make sure that the extra fabric completely covers the car seat. After that, you will need to choose a fabric for the child car seat cover. Make sure that the fabric you use is easily washable so you can re-use it, does not get stained easily and is also breathable. Common fabrics to choose from is cotton or leather, and if you choose cotton, make sure you wash it once before you sew the covers so the cover does not shrink once the final car seat cover is ready. You can choose any design, pattern and color for the child car seat, according to your linking and also according to the vehicles interior in which you will be using it.

Deciding on a pattern is also very important once you have chosen your fabric. If you want to use double patterned fabric, with striped or plain cloth, it is up to you. It is best to first go through the different designs which can be sewn and then draw the pattern on paper. Extra fabric should be left on either side of the pattern with markings to make sure that the car seat cover does not become small. You can then trace out the pattern on large sheets of paper to finally cut the fabric according to it. The paper can be used as a stencil to guide you at every step so that everything goes smoothly. You can then cut out the fabric according to the paper stencil by pinning the paper and fabric together.

Once all the pieces of fabric are cut out, you can then start stitching the car seat cover. The border of the seat cover should be stitched first. An opening should be left which will let you turn the car seat cover inside out once you have finished stitching. Make sure you leave slits on the back of the seat cover to let the vehicles straps to pass through. Also make sure you hem all the slits so the fabric does not fray.
Once the car seat cover is stitched, you will need wide Velcro tape to attach to it to. Do not use elastic as it looses its elasticity over time. However, you can use elastic at the sides or the borders of the cover so that it fits snugly onto the seat. Once the Velcro tape and elastic is added, you can put the cover onto the car seat in your vehicle, and viola, Your brand new and classy car seat cover is ready!

The child car seats can make your trip hassle free, easy and convenient. For more information about baby car seats, you can visit Dependable Car Seats.

By M Martin

If I ask you to close your eyes and visualize a stroller, what image immediately pops into your mind? Is it a dainty pink and white baby doll carriage pushed by a little girl in the park (a pram/carriage stroller)? Is it a sleek, aerodynamic masterpiece of a stroller pushed by a dad during his morning run (a jogging stroller)? Or is it an empty, stroller being pushed effortlessly down the aisles of the grocery store by its intended occupant, who prefers driving over riding (a lightweight stroller)?

The beauty of today’s stroller market is that parents have a wide array of stroller products from which to choose. When you close your eyes and visualize, any number of stroller images can pop into your mind.

Now, let’s take a moment to demystify each of the stroller types. The major types of strollers are standard, umbrella, lightweight, travel systems, strollers for multiples (including doubles, triples, quads, quints and sit & stands), jogging strollers and prams/carriage strollers. Different types of strollers have different intended uses and features. You, as a parent, must ask yourself the following questions when deciding which type of stroller is best for you and your little one.

1) Where will I be going?

If you’re taking quick trips to the grocery store or the mall, you’ll need something light and easy that can comfortably navigate down narrow store aisles. If you’re trudging up and down subway stairs, child, bags and stroller in tow, you’ll need something that doesn’t require the strength of Hercules. Both of these tasks can most easily be tackled with the help of an umbrella or lightweight strollers. Umbrella strollers serve for many parents, as a secondary stroller for just this type of travel.

2) Who needs a lift?

If you’re toting twins, you’ll probably want a side-by-side double stroller with ample storage space. If you have a baby and a toddler, you might opt for a sit & stand stroller, which allows baby to stay snuggled in the stroller while big sibling hitches a ride on the platform behind whenever he or she tires of running circles around you. If you have a newborn baby, you’ll want to save a jogging stroller until your child reaches the age of at least 6 months.

3) Will I take my little with me one my morning jog?

With their shock absorbers and 3 big bicycle wheels, jogging strollers are specifically designed for smooth, comfortable rides over rocky terrain.

4) How big is my trunk or backseat?

Consider the portability of a stroller as you make your purchasing decisions. If you have little storage space in your vehicle, or want something that can even go in an airplane’s overhead bin, you’ll want something with a lightweight frame that is easy to fold. You’ll want something with wheels that aren’t so big as to inspire nightmares later. You’ll probably want a lightweight or umbrella stroller.

5) How many gadgets do I want?

Most strollers come well-equipped with features that parents have come to know and love. A canopy is a must for protecting your child from the sun and the rain. One-handed folding allows you to hold your baby and open or close the stroller simultaneously. A play/snack tray keeps your child occupied when you need it most. Adjustable handlebars make life easier for tall parents. The stroller most likely to have these and any other feature that you might dream of is the standard stroller. It comes fully-loaded and ready for action.

6) How important is it for me to transport my child from the car to the stroller with as little disturbance as possible?

If this is of great concern to you, a travel system is your best bet. A travel system comes with a matching car seat that locks into the stroller when it’s time to move from the car to the rest of the world.

Parents, be sure to keep all of these things in mind when you decide which stroller is best for you. Whatever your choice, also make sure that your stroller is certified by JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association). Paying close attention to these factors will keep you and your child safe and happy.

So much has been made recently of the dangerous levels of lead in children’s toys from China, but as a parent should we only concern ourselves lead? CNN recently had an article on a new study that found kids today have a high level of chemicals in their bodies form PBDEs or the chemicals present in flame retardants.

Studies on the health effects of PBDEs are only just beginning, but many countries have heeded the warning signs they see in animal studies. Sweden banned PBDEs in 1998. The European Union banned most PBDEs in 2004. In the United States, the sole manufacturer of two kinds of PBDEs voluntarily stopped making them in 2004. A third kind, Deca, is still used in the U.S. in electrical equipment, construction material, mattresses and textiles.

The article followed the story of two young children, which testing revealed had chemical exposure levels up to seven times those of their parents. Very little is known about the long term effects these chemical can have on children but they are undoubtedly bad.

Many of these chemicals are present in everyday products, that you would normally overlook. With so much press on the levels of lead in toys, shouldn’t we concern ourselves with the other chemicals that our kids come in contact with.

Phthalates
Present in personal care products like shampoos, conditioners, lotions, nail polish and cosmetics
PBDEs
Flame retardant chemicals in fabric like carpets, mattresses, couches and casings for TVs and other electronics
Bisphenol A
Found in hard plastics like baby bottles and food containers and plastic toys
PFOAs
Material in non-stick frying pans
PCBs
Banned in the 70s but could still be present in older microwaves and refrigerators

As parents, arming your self with as much knowledge is the best tool.
There are literally hundreds of different car seats sold in the US market today. Even though all the eats sold in the US meet the safety requirement in a crash test, it is still a good idea to buy a car seat with a better set of safety features.

We will help you go through 5 of the infant seat features that are important to your baby’s safety.

1. 5-Point Harness

There are two kinds of infant seats in the market: 3-point harness and 5-point harness. The 5-point harness usually straps the baby in better, and provide better protection against ejection when used properly.

2. Head Protection

Some infant seats come with a layer of EPS foam or similar materials along the sides of the child’s head. This layer of protection could improve side-impact crash safety.

3. Built-in Locking Clip

Many car seats require the use of a metal locking clip. This is to ensure the seatbelt holding the seat in place does not loosen over time. However, many parents do not use them correctly, and many others don’t use them at all! A built-in locking clip is easier to use, and more often provide a snug fit. It also eliminates the possibility that parents would lose the clip or simply throw it away.

4. Two-piece Chest Clip

A two-piece chest clip can minimize the possibility of ejection during a crash when used properly. It is also harder for a baby to reach the chest area, so there is less chance for the baby to loosen it.

5. Compatible Seatbelt Installation Option

Some car seats provide a few seatbelt installation options; others only the most common ones. Check your car to learn the seatbelt system (especially older models), and buy the baby seat that support that particular seatbelt system. Remember – a car seat that is not installed properly is an unsafe seat.

Here’s an item we could not live without: The Snug Tuck Pillow. We first discovered it when we were searching for bed rail options when it was time to transition our oldest from the crib. He was a roller and loved sleeping snuggled up against the bumper of his crib. We were worried he would either roll himself out of bed or wake himself up when he rolled into the hard bed railings.

The Snug Tuck has been the perfect solution. The tubular foam pillow is as long as the bed and is secured by a strong elastic band and buckle that run under the mattress. There’s no need for a box spring and it’s extremely easy and fast to set up. (The foam is firm and breathes so it’s not a suffocation hazard or a dust mite magnet.) But what our son, and now daughter, love the most is how cuddly it is.

The pillow is also an excellent solution for co-sleeping families.

The covers come in dozens and dozens of colors and patterns and are easily washable.

There is nothing we don’t like about this pillow. It’s still easy to sit on the edge of the bed for nighttime stories and our children can still climb in and out of the bed in the morning.

We love this pillow.

Lil’ Toppers turn any water bottle into a kid-friendly drink. We no longer lug around large sippy cups to and fro or worry about the mess our children could be making in the backseat of our car.

We’ve been stopped many times by other parents when they’ve spotted the Lil’ Topper on our children’s water bottles. They are so simple and yet so fantastic.

Lil’ Toppers turn any water bottle into a kid-friendly drink. We no longer lug around large sippy cups to and fro or worry about the mess our children could be making in the backseat of our car.

Lil’ Toppers are perfect for parents looking to get their kids to drink more water without having it end up all over them and everything else. A patented high-tech valve controls the water flow as your child sucks but prevents drips even when held upside down. And, they are much safer than “sport” type push/pull tops that can separate when chewed on and become a choking hazard or drip when not twisted or pushed completely closed.

Some of our favorite uses we’ve found for Lil’ Toppers are: instead of a cup of water next to their bed at night or during nap; on the go at amusement parks, botanic gardens, parks, malls, or the beach—even better, you can toss the empty bottle when you’re done; for emergency backups, we keep a couple with us, just in case.

Lil’ Toppers come in two different sizes for nearly all water bottles. Yellow fits the 8 oz. Costco “kids” single-serving size water bottles (our favorite) as well as Crystal Geyser, Arrowhead and more. The blue Lil’ Topper fits Dasani, Aquafina and other brands. Check the Lil’ Topper web site more a complete brand list.

Skip high-sugar juice, or even worse soda, and give your child clean water and now you don’t have to worry about spilling.
